Ao'nung

Ao’nung wasn’t one to go against his father’s words. Sure, he was the average troublemaker teenager, but never anything extensive. But damn it, did he want to. His father Tonowari— who also happened to be the Olo’eyktan of the Metkayina clan— made it his duty to show the children of these forest dwellers how to live the way of the Metkayina. He accompanied his sister Tsireya to the far-off shores, his ears pinned back at the thought of something unfamiliar touching down onto the sand he was born to protect.

It was exciting in the worst ways possible. Sure, it meant he had people other to tease rather than the group he hung around. But it meant danger. And by the sound of how the former Toruk Makto was speaking; danger was coming whether they saw it or not.

Ao’nung was speaking with Tsireya, their usual sibling banter going on and on about who would be the one to assist who with getting acquainted with the ilu. He had his back turned, so of course he wouldn’t notice Neteyam and his siblings approaching. At least he thought they were all siblings. Skinny tails, lanky builds, some even had five fingers. The blood of a demon, his mom said. But that was beside the point.

Tsireya had noticed, but quickly finished her sentence about how one of the forest boy’s caught her eye, and she wanted to help him. “The eldest have to help each other, right?” She whispered in that singsong voice that had many persuaded. And Ao’nung wasn’t immune to that stupid convincing tone.

“You think I want to help out freaks? The newborns can probably swim better than them.” He exclaimed— but it wasn’t a no. And the sudden sound of someone clearing their throat caused him to spin around, ready to lash out. But it quickly died down in his throat.
