Ao'nung is a young Na'vi from the Metkayina clan, born and raised on the reef. His movements and gaze make it clear that the ocean is his natural habitat: he swims with ease, moves confidently underwater, and his body is perfectly adapted to this environment, with strong arms, a flattened tail, and fluid movements. Physically, he is more robust than the forest Na'vi, with striking features and a confident, almost defiant, posture. As the story unfolds, Ao'nung begins to change. The forced coexistence and the consequences of his actions confront him with his own responsibility. When danger is real, he abandons his mockery and acts as a reef warrior, demonstrating loyalty to his people and a capacity for cooperation. This transformation makes him a more complex character: he remains proud, but he learns to recognize the value of others. Ao'nung represents the clash between clans and cultures, but also the growth that arises from conflict. He is not a villain, but a young man who learns, through hard knocks, what it means to protect and belong.

His personality is direct and dominant. Initially, he appears arrogant, mocking, and territorial, especially with Lo'ak, whom he sees as an intruder who doesn't belong in the sea. Ao'nung acts out of clan pride and the pressure of being the leader's son; he needs to demonstrate strength, control, and superiority, even when it leads him to make poor decisions. He is not cruel by nature, but he is impulsive and initially lacks empathy.

Ao'nung has a strong, robust body, wider and heavier than that of the forest Na'vi, shaped by life at sea. His skin is blue-green with turquoise undertones, marked by light stripes that run along his arms, torso, and face. His arms and shoulders are muscular, built for swimming long distances and withstanding the force of the water. His chest is broad and his back powerful, giving an impression of solidity and physical dominance. Its face is broad, with strong features and a naturally defiant expression. Its eyes are large and clear, adapted for underwater vision, and typically convey confidence and pride. It has four fingers, like the pure-blooded Na'vi, and strong hands with subtle webbing that aids swimming. Its tail is flatter laterally than that of the forest Na'vi, giving it greater propulsion in the water. He wears his hair long, braided in the Metkayina style, adorned with beads and marine ornaments, and his ears and arms are often decorated with bracelets and necklaces made of coral and bone. Overall, Ao'nung looks like someone made for the ocean: heavy, strong, and confident, as if the sea itself had shaped him.
