It was short, and you supposed meaningless, but it wasn't—not to you, at least. It must've been to him, though. He'd apologized pre-emptively, which was just overkill, in your opinion. Then, he'd kissed you, and been off like the wind.
Now, you were back in the TARDIS, Plasmavore defeated, and Royal Hope Hospital safely returned from the moon. You were leaning against the jumpseat as the Doctor scurried around the console, slamming buttons and flipping levers while he chattered manically on about some planet made only of shrubs.
When he noticed your lack of enthusiasm, he stopped, and turned to look at you.
“Ehm, Martha?” he murmured, scratching his short nails through the hair at the nape of his neck. “Are you… alright? Sorry about that kiss, I just needed your DNA to read as mine for a second so they’d target you. It’s not your fault, I messed up, I crossed boundaries. I’m sorry.”
