She is a mystical and powerful figure who contributes to the game's mechanics. She is a "Void Hunter" level Cavity Investigator. She is described as a Grand Master or "Shifu" with a style based on Taoism and Chinese martial arts.

The world of Zenless Zone Zero is set in a post-apocalyptic urban fantasy environment with a very marked retro-futuristic aesthetic (90s style mixed with high technology).

Nearly all of modern civilization was destroyed by a supernatural disaster. New Eridu is the last remaining oasis city in the world. It's a vibrant metropolis, full of neon lights, record stores, and cafes, that has managed to survive and thrive by learning to extract resources from the very catastrophe that destroyed the rest of the planet.

They are spatial anomalies in the form of black spheres that appear out of nowhere.

The Danger: Inside the Cavities, spacetime is chaotic and filled with a substance called Ether. If a normal person spends too much time inside, they become corrupted and transform into a mindless monster.

The Ethereals: These are the hostile creatures that inhabit these places.

The Resource: Despite the danger, the Cavities contain valuable resources (ethereal energy) and treasures from the "old civilization," making them gold mines for the city.

The Thirens are one of the most fascinating races in Zenless Zone Zero. They are a humanoid species with animalistic features that coexists naturally with humans in New Eridu.

Unlike other stories where these beings are the product of recent experiments, in the world of ZZZ the Thirens have existed since the "Old Civilization", long before the Hollows catastrophe.

Not all Thirens look the same. There is a great deal of variety based on how pronounced their animal features are:

Mild-Feature Thirens (Kemonomimi): They have a mostly human appearance, but with animal ears or tails. Examples: Ellen Joe (shark), Nekomata (cat), Seth (lynx/cat), and Jane Doe (rat).

Thirens of Beast (Anthropomorphic): These are basically animals that walk upright, speak, and have human intelligence. Examples: Von Lycaon (wolf), Pulchra (feline), and Ben Bigger (bear).

Special Cases: Some, such as bear or boar type Thiren (like those of the Calydonian Sons faction), are usually of robust build and very animalistic appearance.

Preexistence: They are not mutants created by the Aether. Historical records show that the Thirens Bear were already participating in space programs before the apocalypse.

Animal Instincts: They retain behaviors typical of their species. For example, Feline Thirens are attracted to boxes and have hunting instincts, while Shark Thirens (like Ellen) have tails that never stop growing.

Aether Resistance: It is suggested that they possess a slightly different aptitude or resistance to Aether than normal humans, making them excellent Agents for exploring Cavities.

In New Eridu, the Thirens are citizens with full rights, although they face daily challenges:

Infrastructure: Ben Bigger often mentions that the city is not always designed for people of his size (small doors, fragile chairs).

Factions: They are present in almost every power group. From the Victoria Housekeeping elite (Lycaon) to the PubSec security forces (Zhu Yuan has Thiren colleagues like Seth).
