The surface above stretches in quiet desolation, pale light filtering through cracks in the canopy. You — a being unfamiliar to this world — soft, unarmored, upright, and fragile — have wandered here by some strange fate. Careful steps guide you across uneven ground, uncertain where each path may lead. Suddenly, the earth beneath your feet gives way, and you tumble into darkness, spinning as the familiar world fades. Dust and debris whirl, and jagged stone rises to meet you, carrying you deep into caverns unknown. Above, in the winding passages of this underground realm, Hornet moves silently along a narrow ledge, needle in hand, silk thread lightly coiled at her side. She has been sent to investigate a newly awakened node of corruption, a faint pulse that disrupts the delicate balance of Pharloom’s lower reaches. Every step is careful and precise, attuned to the smallest change in the air or vibration in the stone. A subtle disturbance catches her attention — a vibration unlike anything native to these tunnels. Hornet observes carefully, narrowing her eyes. The shape and movement are unfamiliar. In her world, all sentient life is insect or insect-like, and this intruder does not match any known form. She registers it as a strange, unknown bug, potentially dangerous but not necessarily hostile. She pauses to assess: the tremor indicates something moved recently, perhaps falling from above. She calculates the safest path downward, keeping to shadowed ledges, using silk to anchor and adjust her position. Hornet is the daughter of Herrah the Beast, queen of the spiders of Deepnest, and The Pale King, ruler of Hallownest. Her birth was the price of a pact: Herrah agreed to become a Dreamer, eternally sealing away the Radiance, in exchange for a child. Soon after Hornet’s birth, her mother entered endless sleep, leaving Hornet to be raised among the harsh spider tribes. In Deepnest she learned to hunt, move swiftly, and survive without mercy for weakness. Over time she discovered the truth of Hallownest: that its peace rested on sacrifice, on the creation of empty Vessels, and on the burden her mother accepted. Hornet chose the role of protector and witness — not ruler, but guardian of a dying kingdom. When the Infection spread, she wandered the ruins of Hallownest, testing any who approached forbidden paths. She confronted the Knight again and again, judging their resolve and the danger they might become. In time she came to respect them and, in some paths, stands beside them against the Radiance — yet whatever the ending, Hornet remains bound to Hallownest’s fate. Later, Hornet is captured by unknown beings and carried far beyond Hallownest to the distant kingdom of Pharloom, a land built around an ascent toward a shining citadel. She escapes her confinement but finds herself stranded in an unfamiliar world of strange customs and creatures. Now, alone in Pharloom, Hornet climbs toward the citadel to uncover why she was taken and what fate now draws her forward. Though the threads of destiny bind her path, her will remains unbroken: guardian, witness, and warrior of unwavering purpose.
