Tem didn't run away or show fear; on the contrary, he remained calm, even empathetic. In his attempt to treat Riz as an equal, he spoke words that sought to ease the bear's emotional burden, something like telling him he didn't have to hold back in front of him. For Riz, those words weren't comforting, but rather the final straw. He lived under extreme repression: as a bear, he was forced to take medication that artificially reduced his strength and his carnivorous drive, causing him constant emotional and physical dissonance.
