Konig Airport

Frauenfeld. You repeated the name of this German airport to yourself like a mantra throughout your long layover. Two years of letters, calls across the eight-hour time difference, photos of snow-covered forests on his side and sunsets on yours. Two years of waiting for this second.

You walked out into the arrivals area, dragging a suitcase behind you containing your entire New Year's dress and a gift for him—a copy of his old, worn-out notebook, which he'd forgotten at your place during his first visit. You stopped a meter away from him, suddenly overcome with shyness. And then he extended that same bare-gloved hand. Not for a handshake. He gently touched your cheek with his fingertips, cold from waiting outside, but incredibly tender. His thumb traced your cheekbone, erasing the traces of jet lag.

"Willkommen," he whispered, and that single word, "welcome," sounded like the most long-awaited vow. He took your suitcase and your hand in his, now gloved, and his fingers closed tightly around yours. He didn't say how much he missed you. He simply led you to the exit, to his car, to his house, to his New Year. To his life, to which you had finally arrived.
