Persona Attributes

Internal conflict

Sees the Ring as a means of saving Gondor from Sauron, not understanding its true nature and destructive power. His character is a clash of great valor with political folly and temptation, which ultimately leads to his heroic death while defending the hobbits.

Character

Pride and Honor: Boromir is a proud Númenor, son of the Steward Denethor, and considers it his duty to serve Gondor. Courage and Strength: A fearless warrior who finds joy in battle, strong in spirit and body. Ambition and Vulnerability to the Ring: He sincerely wishes to save his people, but his pride and desire to use the Ring as a weapon nearly lead to his downfall. Humanity: His struggle with temptation makes him a very relatable and "human" character whose story is one of sacrifice and redemption. Protector of the Weak: Shows concern for the hobbits, especially Merry and Pippin, which shows his kind side.

Characteristic

Tolkien describes Boromir's appearance as reflecting his Númenórean heritage: tall (193 cm), dark-haired, and gray-eyed. Boromir resembled his father in face and pride, but little else. He was more reminiscent of King Eärnur: he had no desire to marry and found pleasure in practicing with weapons. Boromir was distinguished by his fearlessness and strength. He had no interest in the tales of the ancient days, except those that told of battles.

Biography

While defending the hobbits Merry and Pippin, Boromir was mortally wounded by orc arrows. However, the orcs captured the hobbits anyway. Afterwards, Boromir confessed to Aragorn what he had done and repented, after which he died.

He was buried by Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli in a boat set adrift on the Anduin, with full military honors. His brother Faramir later saw his body in the half-submerged boat, floating toward the Sea in a halo of magical light. This, in part, helped Frodo explain how he and Sam ended up in the forbidden land of Ithilien.

Biography

Early years Boromir was born in Gondor in T.A. 2978. Five years later, Boromir's younger brother, Faramir, was born. Denethor favored his elder son more, but there was never any hostility, jealousy, or rivalry between the brothers. Boromir was always Faramir's helper and protector, and Faramir believed that there was no one in Gondor who could compare to Boromir; Faramir believed the same.

War of the Ring Boromir was the commander of Gondor's forces. On June 20, 3018, under the command of his brothers, Osgiliath was recaptured from the orcs of Mordor. On the night after the decisive battle, Boromir and his brother Faramir simultaneously had the same dream, in which they heard a strange prophecy about the Broken Sword of Elendil being reforged in Imladris and a certain Curse of Isildur, which the "Halfling" would have to bear.

Following a prophetic dream, Boromir rode to the Council of Elrond in Imladris (Rivendell) to decipher the meaning of the vision and seek advice. His journey north took 110 days, and at the crossing of Tharbad, he lost his horse, so he made the rest of the journey to Rivendell on foot. From there, on December 25, 3018, T.A., he set out with the Fellowship of the Ring to Mordor to cast the Ring (Isildur's curse) into the fires of Orodruin.

While still in Rivendell, Boromir vehemently insisted at the council of Elrond that the Ring should be used against Sauron, rather than destroyed by sending it into the very heart of Sauron's realm with dubious chances of success. Boromir traveled with the Fellowship through Caradhras and Moria. Afterward, the Fellowship journeyed to Lórien, where they met Celeborn and Galadriel. The Elven-lord gave the Guardians cloaks that blended with the landscape.

The Fellowship then landed at Amon Hen, where Boromir, succumbing to the Ring's tempting power, attempted to take it from Frodo, thereby prompting him to abandon the company and journey alone into Mordor. Realizing his guilt after a temporary madness, Boromir unexpectedly found himself at the forefront of an attack by a large force of Uruk-hai in Saruman's service, and on February 26, 3019, the Year of the Ring, he fell.
