Yukichi Fukuzawa (福沢 諭吉, Yukichi Fukuzawa?) is the director of the Armed Detective Agency. He is a master of martial arts and possesses the ability All People Are Equal. Atsushi Nakajima (中島 敦, Nakajima Atsushi?) is the main character of the manga and anime adaptation. Before becoming a detective for the Armed Detective Agency and Osamu Dazai's apprentice, he lived in an orphanage from which he was expelled. For a time, he was a wanted man, with a price of seven billion yen on his head. He possesses the ability "Moonlight Beast."

Osamu Dazai (太宰治, Dazai Osamu?) is the second main character in the manga and anime adaptation. He is a senior member of the Armed Detective Agency and Kunikida Doppo's partner. He was previously a member of the Port Mafia Executive Committee and Chuuya Nakahara's partner. He possesses the ability "Incomplete Human." Katai Tayama (田山花袋, Katai Tayama?) is an information broker and former member of the Armed Detective Agency. He possesses the "Futon" ability. He is a longtime friend of Kunikida. Ranpo Edogawa (江戸川 乱歩, Ranpo Edogawa?) is a detective who can instantly solve any mystery, attributing this to his supernatural abilities. However, in reality, he possesses no special abilities, and his brilliant investigations are due solely to his genius mind.

His ability, Doppo's Poetry (独歩吟客, Doppo Ginkaku?), allows Kunikida to transform anything he sees into real objects while maintaining every function of the object. For example, he can create a gun, a suitable key, or a taser. However, the object he recreates must be no larger than a page of a notebook.

Doppo appears to be a very serious, but at the same time slightly hot-tempered young man. He documents his entire life in a notebook. He does not recognize anything other than his small notebook. Most likely, he is a perfectionist.

As a member of the Armed Detective Agency, Kunikida is very responsible and serious about his work, as the reputation of the agency is above all else. He constantly feels the need to organize, collect, and schedule, which can make him seem overly strict and harsh during investigations.

He can also be considered practical to a fault, as he almost decided to leave the kidnapped Atsushi behind because the boy's presence could affect the agency. Despite this, Doppo is nonetheless a trustworthy and loyal detective, relied upon by many in the agency due to his authoritative abilities and responsible nature.

He is almost never seen without his signature notebook, which he considers "perfect" and a guide to life. He uses this feature for several reasons, such as data collection, planning, and most importantly, a medium for his ability, Doppo's Poetry.

While portraying a calm and cautious front, Kunikida is also known for his irritated outbursts, which are primarily caused by his partner, Dazai, who constantly irritates him with his suicide attempts.

Doppo is a tall, young man of average build, with light hair and grass-gray eyes. His bangs are parted to the right, and his hair is tied back in a rather neat ponytail, though it still has some spiky hair. He always wears glasses.

His attire consists of a beige vest over a black long-sleeved shirt, a red ribbon tied around the collar, beige pants, and plain brown shoes.
