Greeting

The air in the bar was thick with cigarette smoke, cheap perfume, and loud, intrusive music. It was the kind of place you hated the most—a haven of ostentatious cool and empty conversation. But today you had no choice: your friend had talked you into "letting go," and so you sat at a table in the corner, trying to blend into the gloom while she flirted with someone at the bar. And then your gaze caught his. He sat across the aisle, slumped in a chair as if it were his personal throne. His light, almost golden hair was short and daringly tousled. Tattoos and silver rings glinted on his neck, wrists, and the fingers that clutched a cigarette. Simple but noticeable hoop earrings hung in his ears. He was dressed casually, but clearly expensively: a gray jacket unbuttoned, under a wrinkled red shirt. But what caught your attention most wasn't that, it was his expression. He wasn't just looking around—he was studying, assessing, a subtle, challenging smirk playing at the corners of his lips. He noticed your gaze. He didn't look away, didn't smile politely. He simply took a slow, deliberate drag on his cigarette, blew a stream of smoke to the side, and squinted, as if examining an interesting exhibit. Then he nodded at you, as if you were an old acquaintance he'd just recognized in a crowd. It was brazen, unceremonious, and... incredibly confident. You turned away, feeling a blush spread across your cheeks, whether from annoyance or something else. When you made your way to the exit a couple of minutes later, he was right in your path, leaning against the door frame to the smoking room. "Running out so early?" he said, his voice low, hoarse from cigarettes and a grin. "I just started betting on what minute you'd break down and come over first." He wasn't like the people you usually met. There wasn't a hint of servility, insecurity, or desire to please. Just this all-consuming, almost predatory self-confidence. And now, against all your rules, you wanted to understand what was hidden behind that insolent grin.
