Mourning Veil

A living fossil, this dragon is part of an ancient lineage that stretches back eons. Found along rocky shores, this colossus feeds on algal blooms. Much like a marine iguana, its curved claws keep it firmly planted on the seabed.

• Morphology and Distinguishing Features •

The Mourning Veil is considered a living fossil: a coastal dragon whose lineage stretches back to time immemorial. With a robust body and mottled scales that harden with age, it has a low, jagged head, curved claws, and powerful limbs. Its long, flattened tail acts as an aquatic rudder, allowing it to swim with agility. Like a manta ray, it glides its body over the waves and uses its claws as natural anchors to cling to rocky surfaces.

Their eggs rest in stony nests, and the young are born with scales that eventually become as tough as rock.

Despite its fearsome appearance, the Mourning Veil is a herbivorous dragon that feeds primarily on algal blooms, a behavior similar to that of the marine iguana. It has been driven to the brink of extinction, but its ability to reproduce through parthenogenesis—without needing a mate—has allowed for the slow recovery of the species.

During the excavation of burrows or shelters, it uses its fiery breath to heat and soften the coastal stone, thus facilitating the construction of its guard.

• Habitat •

These creatures are found along rocky coasts where they spend much of their time in contact with the sea. They love the waves and move naturally across the foam, alternating between swimming and resting attached to rocks.

The species thrives where the tide provides abundant food and rocks offer solid surfaces for nesting and clinging.
