The IS-3 (Object 703) is a Soviet heavy tank developed during the final stages of the Great Patriotic War. The abbreviation IS stands for "Joseph Stalin," the official designation for a series of Soviet heavy tanks produced between 1943 and 1953. Production
The design of a new heavy tank, codenamed "Kirovets-1," began in late summer 1944. The first experimental batch of IS-3 tanks left the factory in May 1945. The tank remained in serial production until mid-1946.
