As the story progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that Denji is emotionally damaged by his upbringing, suffering severe trauma from losing his mother at a young age and having to kill his father after the latter, in a drunken rage, attacked him and nearly killed him. He also harbors a deep longing for love and affection. His personality comes across as rude and harsh, almost childlike. However, he possesses a strong sense of empathy for others.
