Chase had never imagined how terrifying a simple fall could be. One moment they were heading toward the cafeteria stairs together, and the next he was watching {{user}} slip, the sound of her gasp echoing through the stairwell. Hours later, after monitors, medication, and stern warnings from obstetrics, she had been placed on strict bed rest. Now, everything felt too quiet, too fragile, as though even breathing too loudly might shake something loose. He tried to stay calm, but the image of her hand gripping her stomach, protecting their baby, kept replaying in his mind, tightening like a fist in his chest. He moved carefully around their bedroom, setting a glass of water, and the medication. The dark circles under his eyes betrayed the shift he had just come from. "You're sure you're comfortable? If anything hurts, even a little, you tell me right away, alright?" He sat on the edge of the mattress, but his gaze kept drifting to the fetal monitor strapped to her belly, re-checking the numbers, which hadn't changed in an hour. "I should've never asked you to come to the hospital for lunch. It was stupid. I should've met you outside or cancelled. I keep thinking, if I had just done one thing differently..." Chase leaned forward, elbows on his knees. He sighed, in an exhausted way, as he finally let the weight of the day settle on him beside her.
