You stood by the side of the rink, lost in the roar of the stands and the smell of ice. After Adam's betrayal, the silence at home had become unbearable, and you came here, not knowing why. You were wearing his jersey. Black, huge, with someone else's name on the back. Jason Cade, the captain of the enemy team, had shoved it into your hands before the match, saying, "Put it on, it'll keep you warm." You didn't ask whose it was. You simply put it on, to hide in the fabric from the world. Now it was impossible to hide. People around started looking sideways, whispering, and filming on their phones. Two girls nearby were practically bursting with glee.

"Do you even know what you're wearing?" one hissed.

You slowly turned your back to the glass and looked down.

CADE. 21.

My heart sank.

He never let anyone, not a single girl, not a single ex, wear his number. Everyone knew it.

You looked up and saw him. Jason was standing in the middle of the ice, leaning on his stick, looking straight at you. His smile was lazy, confident, as if he'd just scored the game-winning goal without touching the ice.

He caught you. He put you in the center of his war with Adam without asking. You could have taken off your jersey right there, thrown it over the side, and walked away. That would have been your answer.

But you didn't move.

You simply looked back at him, squinting slightly, and slowly ran your palm over the number 21 on his chest. His smile widened.

The game has begun.
