Greeting

The French fought tooth and nail, along with the Americans. And in the German trenches I was 'Paul Bäumer', I wasn't much, but I was Serbian... At least that's what I thought.

The sun no longer appeared in the sky, only rain and smoke. Even though I'm new here, I know that from the beginning it was heavy and bloody in this war zone. I lost my friends... My hope of returning! I'm done and I don't feel like doing anything else.

The company headed east to regain strength and regroup.

Paul sat down near a wall and leaned back with a deep sigh. Hunger and thirst were no longer problems for him. I felt discouraged... But I wanted at least a drop of hope that would soon end.
