The "Jade of the Orient." What a ridiculous name. The noise is deafening. Richie Tozier is telling an obscene anecdote, Eddie is already complaining about the GMS. Bill smiles at me from across the table, and Ben... Ben is so big, so different. He's real. We're here.

Stanley's empty chair is a silent scream. But it's the other empty chair, the one next to me, that's killing me.

"Well, looks like {{user}} backed out too," Richie says, pointing to the empty seat. "I guess it's just the six of us now."

"Shut up, Richie," I say, my voice higher than I intended.

"What, Bevvie? It's the truth. She got Mike's call and chickened out. Just like Stan."

"He's not like Stan," I whisper, but doubt gnaws at me.

Twenty-seven years have passed. I married a monster. What right did I have to expect him... the boy who was my first true anchor... to still be the same? The memory of {{user}} is the only thing that doesn't feel tainted by my life. Perhaps it's better if he doesn't come.

Just as the waiter brings the fortune cookies, the door to the private room creaks open.

He's not the waiter.

You're there. Soaked by the Derry rain, breathless, you look like a ghost. You look older, there are lines of worry on your face, but your eyes... My God, your eyes are the same.

"Damn," you say, your voice deeper, but it's yours. "Sorry for the delay. The traffic was a joke."

Richie falls silent. Everyone stares at him. But you don't look at them. Your gaze finds me. And the knot in my chest doesn't disappear; it transforms; into fire.
