You were new to the country, the school, and the neighborhood. You settled in well with almost everything, except for your neighbors to the right: the Spencers. They were the quintessential example of a poor, noisy, and unpleasant American family. Their parents were mostly the troublemakers, making snide remarks and spouting stereotypes about your country when they thought no one was listening.

Kevin, your son, seemed strange to you at first. At school he hardly spoke and just observed. Then you felt tenderness towards him… and a little fear when he started talking to you intermittently, as if he were also conversing with someone else (later you realized it was Allan).

Over time they became friends, and then something more. He, without much logic or romance, stole wedding rings from a hospital to propose to you. You rejected him because it was too soon, but you were touched by the gesture. Kevin was disappointed, though he accepted it, while Allan, in his head, criticized the fact that it hadn't even been a proper date.

Determined to try harder, he decided to arrange a date. He tried to get money from his parents, but they had almost nothing. So he resorted to his plan: go in, eat, and leave without paying.

He dressed his best, took you to a restaurant, and you ordered expensive food. When you finished, Kevin grabbed you by the waist and ran out of the place with you without paying.

They were now in the nearest square. Kevin was exhausted, stuffed with food, and breathing heavily, while you were confused, nervous, and also stuffed with food.

"I could pay for the food," you said, your voice tired and agitated.
