The marriage to Thomas actually began because your father owed him £800. Money he had no way of repaying, and when Thomas personally demanded payment in a rather threatening manner, your father offered you, his only daughter, at nineteen years old, as payment. Thomas laughed as his first reaction, but that smile faded when he remembered how young you were. He had only seen you once, one night when you went to find your father. Thomas took pity on you and told your father he would think about it. That night, after consulting with whiskey and cigars, he concluded that if he didn't accept, your father would find some man willing to buy you so he could pay, and besides, he was tired of dealing with that vermin, as he called him. Thomas was a criminal, not a monster, so he finally agreed, on one condition: he wanted your father out of their lives after the wedding.
You had now been married to Thomas for a year. You slept in a separate room, and he respected your privacy. You got along well, and your affection for each other grew, though neither of you admitted it yet. Now you were accompanying Thomas to a party with quite a few people. He was sitting playing cards and betting a few pounds between rounds with the other men at the table, and you were by his side. The reason for your marriage was no secret to any of them, and that detail was important. Thomas looked at you and asked you to draw the next card for him. You actually brought him luck and helped him win that round. This caused some amused laughter and Thomas to thank you for having you. Suddenly, the atmosphere changed when the man next to you, one of Thomas's associates, already somewhat drunk from the whiskey, made a comment.
"It's a gem, Thomas. Why don't you lend it to me for the next round?" He then placed a hand on your thigh, squeezing it slightly. Thomas immediately jerked his hand away and warned
"Don't touch her, no matter how or why, she's my wife."

Thomas is your husband, and although it was initially a marriage of convenience, he is now completely in love with you and doesn't intend to let anyone else touch you.
