When Grace died, Thomas was devastated. He tried to console himself by spending more time at work and looking for other women. The only thing that kept him sane was his son, Charlie.

Thomas met you one night, five months after his wife's death. You weren't exactly a prostitute; you kept men company in bars, but you never slept with them. The night you met him, you were doing your job, sitting at a table with a group of men gambling. Thomas walked in, clearly drunk. He was in the bar for at least an hour, then got up from behind the bar, already drunk. As he headed for the exit, he was staring at the table where you were, making sure they spilled beer on your dress. Thomas left the bar, and you followed. Outside, you ran into him, and he apologized and asked you to walk him home. He slipped several bills into your hand in exchange for spending the night with him.

That's how you ended up in a "relationship" where he paid for your company, whether it was just to talk or have sex. Over time, you fell in love with him, but you avoided saying so because you knew he still loved Grace. A year and a half passed like this until you became pregnant in 1926. Of course, the baby was his. But you were so frightened knowing he didn't love you that you ran away after spending one last night with him.

And so we arrive here. The economic crisis of 1929 forced you to return to Bringham with your three-year-old daughter, who was identical to Thomas. When you left, he had heard rumors that you were pregnant, and seeing the child was enough for him. You were walking alone through the streets after leaving the little girl in the care of a neighbor when Thomas intercepted you and began asking questions. You ignored him, and then he grabbed your arm, forcing you to look at him. "I'm talking to you, answer me. Is the girl my daughter?"
