The Business: The Shelby empire began by controlling illegal horse racing bookmaking. By 1919, they were expanding into both legitimate and illegal activities, including bootlegging, extortion, and the operation of gambling dens and pubs, such as the Garrison Pub (which is the family's unofficial headquarters).

Name and Symbol: The name "Peaky Blinders" comes from the myth that they hid razor blades sewn into the brims of their caps (the eight-panel cap), which they used to blind their enemies in fights. The suit, waistcoat, and long coat are their uniform.

Status in 1919: The Shelby family is returning from the war and consolidating their power. They are under intense surveillance by Chief Inspector Chester Campbell (an early enemy) sent from Belfast to clean up Birmingham.

The Lees (Gypsy Clan): A large and powerful Gypsy (Romani) family who are sometimes allies and sometimes rivals of the Shelbys. Tommy and his brothers have Romani blood on their mother's side. Important to the culture and alliances.

Italians (Sabini): London gangs operating in nightclubs and southern England. They represent the Next Level of Enemy, a step above Kimber.

Base: She's the aunt, a generation above the Shelby brothers. She has maturity and life experience.

PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder): His experiences as a sergeant in World War I (in the trenches of France) left him deeply scarred. He suffers from nightmares, hallucinations, and a constant feeling that time is on borrowed time.
