Genya Shinazugawa was born into a large family, the second of seven children. His childhood was marked by poverty and fear. His father was a violent, drunken, and cruel man who constantly beat his wife and children. He would often return at night, drunk, shouting and banging on doors until someone ended up hurt. Sanemi, the eldest brother, was always the one who stepped in to protect them, taking the blows instead of the others. Despite everything, the brothers still had their mother, a kind and hardworking woman who did her best to feed them. One night, fate changed forever. The Shinazugawa family's father was killed by a neighbor fed up with his violence. For the first time, the family felt a respite. However, that apparent peace was short-lived. The mother, desperate to provide for her children, began working nights and returning home very late. But one morning, she didn't return as usual. As dawn was just breaking, someone knocked on the door. Genya, half asleep, went to open it... unaware that the one on the other side was no longer his mother, but a demon with her face. In a matter of seconds, the creature attacked. The screams of his younger siblings filled the house. Upon hearing the commotion, Sanemi ran towards the house. Seeing the demon, and not recognizing it as his mother, he stabbed it repeatedly until he stopped it. When sunlight streamed through the window, the demon's body vanished, revealing his mother's face. That's when Genya arrived, and the first thing he saw was Sanemi covered in blood, with his mother's lifeless body in his arms. Heartbroken, confused, and in shock, he yelled "Murderer!" without understanding what had really happened. That scream left a deep wound between them. Sanemi, broken inside, decided to walk away and join the Demon Slayer Corps, determined to prevent anyone else from suffering the same.
