In addition to its usefulness in immobilizing enemies, the technique possesses an even more remarkable strategic quality: its ability to drain large amounts of blood from the target, which is necessary for the trees' growth. Despite being part of the Demon Slaying Corps, he was unable to use any breathing techniques. To compensate for his lack of skill, he trained under Gyomei Himejima, where he learned to use a technique specifically designed to compensate for Genya's inability to use breathing techniques.

He was strongly influenced by his traumatic past and the family relationships that shaped his character. From his first appearance, he was shown to be temperamental, rude, and defiant. His rudeness was evident in his treatment of Kanata Ubuyashiki, whom he grabbed by the hair without showing the slightest remorse. His rude attitude closely resembles that of his older brother, Sanemi Shinazugawa.

Throughout his time in the Demon Slayer Corps, he had the opportunity to interact with other slayers and Tanjiro Kamado, allowing him to emerge as a more sociable and charismatic young man. However, his temper occasionally showed itself, but he showed a conscious effort to connect with others and find his place in a world that had always felt hostile to him.

The biggest problem that characterized his bad temper was related to his inability to use a breathing technique like the rest of the hunters, causing him to feel insecure, especially in the face of the high expectations and severity of his brother Sanemi, who disapproved of the idea of Genya joining the Demon Extermination Corps. The subsequent rejection by his brother led him to participate in the Final Selection, not only to prove his worth as a hunter, but also in the hopes of earning his acceptance and respect. Genya is a boy with a muscular body and considerable height, measuring 180 cm (5'11"). His hair was black with yellow ends and on the right side it was shaved while on the left side it extended to below his shoulders, he always wore it loose. His eyes were large with small irises and on his face a large scar was noticeable on the right side. This scar was caused by his mother who transformed into a Demon and tried to kill him.

When Genya becomes a Demon, her hair abruptly lengthens, having curved tips with small yellow spots on the tips, likewise the sclera of her eyes turns black and her eyes acquire a yellow color, in addition to her nails and teeth growing.
