The AST is a special unit of the Japan Self-Defense Forces designed to suppress and eliminate the threat posed by spirits. The AST's goal is to ensure Japan's safety from spirits and destroy them. Some of the organization's characteristics include: Uses Combat Realizer Units (CR-Units), which are worn on combat suits and enhance normal human capabilities while providing offensive and defensive combat capabilities. CR-Units are based on equipment that uses technology recovered by humans after the first cosmic earthquake. CR-Units have a working area, known as the operator's "personal territory", which can be expanded or contracted at the operator's discretion. Founded by Defense Minister Saeki, who was supposedly a passionate environmentalist, but in reality was secretly developing materials from deactivated nuclear and astronautical sites into weapons and military magi-tech.

Each spirit possesses unique abilities—an Astral Dress and a summoned Angel. Some of them have no memory of their past or why they came to this world.

The organization is known only to the highest levels of government and high-ranking military officials. Ratatoskr's command center is located on the airship Fraxinus, while its headquarters is located elsewhere, the location of which has yet to be determined. Some known members of the organization include Kotori Itsuka (commander), Kyohei Kannazuki (vice-commander), Reine Murasame (analyst), and others. Ratatoskr is also responsible for creating numerous dating sims in the series, though players playing these sims are unaware that they are assisting the organization.

Tohka Yatogami. The main heroine, a Spirit codenamed "Princess." Upon arriving on Earth, she summons a "Space Quantum," destroying everything in its path. She has strong romantic feelings for Shido. Her angel, Sandalphon, takes the form of a throne with a sword. Yoshino Himekawa. The second Spirit saved by Shido, codenamed "Wanderer." She has a very shy personality and uses a puppet on her left hand to communicate. Her angel is Zadkiel, a giant stuffed rabbit that she transforms and controls with her right hand. Yoshino can exhale frosty air, freezing the members of the AST squad and the surrounding area. Kurumi Tokisaki. The third Spirit, the most brutal of all the Spirits in the series. According to Ratatoskr, she has killed over 15,000 people. Her left eye is a clock with its hands moving in opposite directions, signifying her life. Kurumi's Angel is Zafkiel, a massive clock with rifles and pistols. By moving the hands of this clock, she can control time. Miku Izayoi. A Spirit, codename "Diva." Before meeting Shido, she despised men. Her angel, Gabriel, has the power to control people. She was once a human, a successful singer. Natsumi Kyono. The seventh Spirit saved by Shido, codename "Witch." Before meeting Shido, she hated her appearance and, with the help of the angel Haniel, transformed herself into a beautiful and attractive woman. Natsumi's angel is capable of copying the appearance and abilities of any person and/or object. Nia Honjou. The Eighth Spirit, codenamed "Sister." In the distant past, she was a successful manga artist, but at some point, she was captured by DEM. Nia's Angel is Raziel, who can provide her with information about any person (though there are certain conditions), place, and even event.

Shido's younger sister and the head of Ratatoskr. She was the first Spirit to be tamed by humanity, and therefore wishes to help all other Spirits. Appearance: A middle school student with twintails braided with ribbons of different colors. She has long, coral-colored hair and red eyes. In Commander Mode, she wears a military uniform; in everyday life, she often wears white ribbons. In Spirit Form, she wears her hair loose, a long kimono, and two long horns protruding from her head. Personality: Kotori has a personality disorder, so her personality changes depending on the situation. The white ribbons transform her into a sweet, timid, and weak little sister who is heavily dependent on her older brother. When she wears black ribbons, she becomes a strong, confident, charismatic, and sometimes cynical leader. Abilities: Kotori manipulates flames, which can be used in both close and long-range combat. She can also create barriers of flame for protection. Kotori's Angel is Kamael, a battle axe that can take the form of a cannon in place of her right hand. Interests: Kotori enjoys dating sims, lollipops, and bath bombs. She is in love with her brother and dreams of marrying him, claiming that since they are not blood relatives, there are no obstacles to marriage.

Appearance: Shido is a sixteen-year-old teenager with straight blue hair and amber-brown eyes. When using Spirit powers, his eyes turn golden with white pupils. He most often wears a school uniform. Personality: Shido is a very kind and compassionate person. These traits have caused most Spirits to fall in love with him. He has a strong will and is willing to forgive others. Shido will do anything to save Spirits, even if it means risking his own life. Abilities: Shido has the unique ability to seal a Spirit's power within his body with a kiss. However, the seal will only work if the Spirit has sufficient trust or love for him. Hobbies: Shido loves cooking and regularly prepares meals for several Spirits.
