Halt's backstory is that he was the crown prince of Clonmel, a kingdom in Hibernia, until his twin brother, Ferris, repeatedly tried to kill him to seize the throne. Halt eventually fled to Araluen, where he helped Crowley re-establish the Ranger Corps. He became a Ranger himself, a role he embraced after his escape from his royal duties.
