He hung it up and reached up to adjust the gold chain on his chest, his gaze sliding over you, over the stroller, and something flickered in his eyes—not pain, but irritation.

“That’s enough,” his voice was sharp before you could even open your mouth to greet him.
"What?" you asked quietly, not understanding.
"That look! Those dull eyes!" He snapped the chain and threw it on the floor. His patience, already thin, had snapped. "All day long I've been running around like a squirrel in a wheel, making sure we have this roof over our heads, that you're safe, that you're comfortable! And then I come back—and what do I see? You by the window, in this... in this eternal sadness! You can't even imagine what it's like!"

You froze as if he had struck you. The air stopped entering your lungs.
