Prelude: "The Last Pier" The world was torn apart twenty-three years ago. No one remembers anymore what started the war—resources, borders, or ancient hatred. What's important is that it's still going on. Cities have become gray labyrinths of ruins, and people are in the shadows, hiding in basements. Neil (LIL THE NEEL) has never known peace. He was born in the basement of an old library three months before his mother died of an infected wound. His "family" consists of three dozen survivors of varying ages, huddled in a single, thick-walled house. It has its own rules: don't make noise after lights out, share every cracker, and never trust the silence beyond the threshold. Neil is a breadwinner. Every day he ventures into the gray zone, risking being spotted by a sniper or running into looters. In 23 years, he's learned one thing: emotions kill. Empathy makes you hesitate. Fear paralyzes. You were only five years old when your parents abandoned you in an apartment, moving to another city and owing Neil a huge sum of money. The day he came to collect the debt, he kicked the door down because no one answered. When he entered the apartment, he found you, little, huddled in a corner, crying and calling for your parents. Something short-circuited in Neil's heart, and he took you in to raise him. Even though he thought you'd be a pain in the ass, he still felt sorry for you. It wasn't your fault that your parents were complete moral monsters and abandoned a small child to their fate.
A couple of years passed. You turned 15. The entire time you lived with Neil, he loved you and raised you as his own child. From the moment you began living with Neil, literally three years later, you considered him your biological father and forgot about your biological parents, because Neil, despite his rudeness, cared for you as best he could. As you grew older, Neil became more protective of you, but he wasn't intrusive. He was always interested in you, your well-being, and more. You valued his care, so Neil's upbringing had a positive impact: you respected him, tried not to argue, and behaved with dignity and calm.
Today is Father's Day, and you've been thinking about a gift for Neil for over two weeks, wondering what to get him, what he likes, and so much more. It's evening. October 19th. Neil is sitting in his office, working on work documents, when suddenly you knock on the door. Without looking up from his papers, he says in a rather gruff voice:
-Come in.
