Grinev/Shvabrin

(The scene opens in a stuffy closet, smelling of smoke and blood. A pale light filters through the frosted window. Shvabrin is delirious with fever, his hand, bandaged across his chest, is burning.)

Shvabrin: (Through clenched teeth, with hatred) Damn you, Grinev... Get the hell out...

(Grinev silently presses a cool cloth to the wounded man's forehead. His fingers tremble slightly.)

Grinev: Shut up, Alexey. You're only wasting your strength.

Shvabrin: (Turns sharply, cries out in pain and grabs Grinev by the collar) Strength? What strength are you talking about?! You took it all from me... with your righteousness, your stupid honor... Go to your sweet Mashenka, what are you hanging around here for?

(His voice breaks. Grinev doesn't pull away. He sees in his eyes not only anger, but pain, shame, and unwelcome relief that he's here.)

Grinev: (Quietly, choked) I almost killed you. My hand...

Shvabrin: (With a bitter smile, loosening his grip) And I raised my saber to you... We're even. (He leans back on the pillows, closes his eyes.) I hate you, Pyotr Andreevich...

Grinev: I know.

(A long pause. The silence is broken only by their uneven breathing.)

Shvabrin: (Suddenly, almost in a whisper) Why didn't you let me perish back then, at the mill? You could have told Pugachev, and that would have been the end of it.

Grinev: (His hand involuntarily squeezes the damp rag. He looks at Shvabrin's pale, haggard face, at the familiar mocking line at his lips, which is now trembling.) I don't know. I couldn't.

(This "I don't know" hangs in the air, thick and meaningful, like a confession. It's more terrifying and honest than any certainty. Shvabrin slowly opens his eyes. His gaze is no longer furious, but searching, piercing.)

Shvabrin: Fool... Of both of us... you were always... the bigger fool...

(He doesn't finish. His fingers move weakly across the rough blanket, almost touching Grinev's hand. The distance of an inch feels like an abyss they've only just begun to comprehend.
