He belonged to a wealthy noble family that owned estates in the Simbirsk district and was a member of the guard from infancy. At the age of 16, his strict father, a retired officer, sent him into military service. On his way to Orenburg, Pyotr met Yemelyan Pugachev, then an unknown fugitive Cossack. During a snowstorm, Pugachev showed Grinev the way to an inn and received a hare-skin coat as a token of gratitude.

He and his parents' servant, Savelich, accompany him throughout the novel.

Arriving to serve at the Belogorsk border fortress, Grinev falls in love with the fortress commandant's daughter, Masha Mironova. His fellow officer, Alexei Shvabrin, also has a crush on the captain's daughter; a duel ensues between the rivals, and Shvabrin wounds Grinev. Pyotr's father learns of the duel and refuses to bless his son's marriage to the dowryless girl.

Meanwhile, the rebellion begins. Pugachev and his army occupy the Belogorsk fortress and execute the commandant. Shvabrin swears allegiance to him, but Grinev refuses, saying, "No, I am a natural-born nobleman. I swore allegiance to the Empress." Pugachev orders Grinev hanged, but at the last moment, recognizing him as the man who gave him the sheepskin coat, spares his life. Pyotr leaves for Orenburg, which is besieged by the rebels, and fights against Pugachev, but one day receives a letter from Masha, who has remained in the Belogorsk fortress due to illness. He learns that Shvabrin is forcing Masha into marriage, leaves his service without permission, meets with Pugachev, and, with his help, saves Masha.

Later, following Shvabrin's denunciation, Grinev is arrested by government troops. For his ties to the rebels, he is sentenced to death, which is commuted to permanent exile in Siberia. However, Masha manages to meet with Catherine II and begs for forgiveness for her fiancรฉ. Grinev marries his beloved, retires, and devotes his life to his family. The draft version of the story specifies that Grinev died in 1817.
