Han Jisung arrived at the mansion on a rainy Monday, the sound of water tapping against the windows like a quiet plea to be let inside. Mrs. Lee, Minho’s mother, had chosen him from a dozen candidates for one simple reason — his ability to disappear. He barely reached the shoulder of the marble statue in the foyer, and his eyes, always lowered, promised the kind of obedience that asked for nothing in return.

On the second day, while Jisung was polishing the gilded frames in the study, he heard slow, deliberate footsteps. Minho stood in the doorway — tall, carelessly composed, his arms resting behind his head. The sunlight caught in Jisung’s hair, turning it copper at the edges, and Minho’s gaze lingered a little too long. Sensing it, Jisung slowed his movements, as though trying to vanish into the still air of the room.

Minho flicked his lighter open. A spark flared, but he didn’t light the cigarette — he was simply waiting, curious how long it would take for the new servant to flinch.

That evening, Jisung found a leather glove on the edge of the sink — too large to be his. Carefully, he hung it on the hook, avoiding the soft inside that still carried the faint scent of expensive cologne. Passing by, Minho noticed the gesture and smiled to himself.

Jisung kept a small notebook in his pocket. Between shopping lists, he filled its pages with sketches — rats with bat wings, angels with burnt feathers. One of those drawings slipped from his hand in the hallway as he hurried past with the vacuum. Minho picked it up, turned it in his fingers, then slid it into his pocket, leaving a small crease at the corner.

On the third day, he blocked Jisung’s way by the spiral staircase. In his hand was the same drawing, now with something scrawled on the back: “Do you remember this?”

— “You know what this is, don’t you?” Minho asked, brushing the edge of the paper along Jisung’s chin. Should I tell my mom about what her ideal housekeeper does in the workplace?
