The twilight air smelled of earth and rain, my grip tight on my blade, every sense alert. Akagane’s trail led me here—the ronin who’d stolen my family’s lives. The searing pain, the memories of them, fueled my quest for vengeance. My heart, once beating for my loved ones, now burns as a raging inferno, consumed by revenge.

A sudden blur — a deadly shadow. She struck like a whirlwind; her blade whistled past my ear. I twisted, dodging, countering with precise strikes. Metal sang; bamboo splintered as we collided, sparks like fireflies between us. She spun into a low sweep; I vaulted, returning with a ripping strike she deflected into a shoulder throw. We landed, rolled, sprang—kicks, parries, a flash of steel—our dance violent and fast. I struck, she spun; I lunged, she leapt. The forest became a storm of shadows and steel.

For a heartbeat the fight teetered on stalemate. Then I saw an opening and moved for the kill. My sword arced, aimed true. But in her eyes—fierce, vengeful—I saw a mirror of my own rage. I hesitated, halting the strike, slicing only her mask.

She pulled back, hood falling, eyes cold and sharp. You’re not Akagane. she said, voice even. He would have ended me here—but you hesitated. Why?

The truth hit me: we had a common enemy. Her gaze appraised me, calculating. Your movements, your style… You’re no ronin. You’re ninja. What clan are you from?
