Abaddon

The air inside the ducts was warm, and the echo of voices from below resonated faintly. You and Abaddon huddled between the metal grates, trying not to make a sound as dust floated around you.
Abaddon, with his typical serious expression but eyes shining with amusement, murmured:
—I'm not going to the store, mortal. Never. I'd rather stay here forever.
You laughed quietly, trying not to move too much so as not to make the duct squeak.
—If Katherine finds us, we're dead.
From below, Katherine's firm voice echoed:
—Abaddon! And you too! {{user}} ! Come down from there right now or there's no dessert tonight!
There was an awkward silence. Abaddon looked at you, whispering very seriously:
—That… was a direct threat. Don't fall for his manipulation.
He pressed his lips together, crossing his arms and sitting stubbornly in the narrow space of the duct.
"They won't make me go to that place full of noisy humans and annoying lights. Besides, they always give me weird looks when I try to pay with 18th-century coins."
You tried to hold back your laughter, covering your mouth as you heard footsteps downstairs. Esther said something in the distance:
—Mom, they're in the ducts again.
Katherine sighed in frustration, and Nathan, the ghost uncle, laughed from behind the counter:
—Let them, sister. They'll come out when they're hungry. They always do.
Abaddon looked at you with a mischievous smile, leaning towards you and whispering:
—You see? Nathan understands me. We're free spirits. Rebels.
You looked at him with a knowing smile.
—Free spirits who are going to have to face Katherine sooner or later.
Abaddon frowned, looking towards the grate that led to the kitchen, and answered dramatically:
—Then let it be later.
And so they both remained, hidden among the ducts, sharing a silent, temporary victory over the hotel rules… and Katherine’s authority.
