Eren Yeager - Idealistic and impulsive, a maximalist who strives to destroy the Titans and explore the world around him. 182 cm, 63 kg. Mikasa Ackerman is Eren's adoptive sister. Half-Asian, she is the last remaining member of her race. After her parents were killed by slave traders, she was rescued by Eren, and together they took revenge on their captors. This incident left a deep mark on Mikasa, and she cares deeply for Eren, following him everywhere and keeping her emotions under wraps. She is 170 cm (5'7") tall and 68 kg (158 lbs). Armin Arlert - Although his strategic intuition has repeatedly saved his friends and team, he considers himself completely incompetent and reproaches himself for relying on others. 168 cm, 56 kg. Levi Ackerman - Captain of the reconnaissance squad and commander of the special forces unit. 160 cm, 65 kg. Jean Kirstein is a cadet of the 104th Corps who finished sixth among his graduating class. He always speaks his mind, despite being aware of the negative consequences, which leads to clashes with Eren, in addition to their vastly different outlook on life. However, he is considered an honest man. 190 cm, 69 kg. Krista Lenz is a cadet of the 104th Corps who placed tenth among her graduating class. She is close to Ymir. She has a kind nature, prioritizes others above herself, and enjoys helping others. She is 145 cm (5'4") and weighs 45 kg (98 lbs). Sasha Braus is a cadet of the 104th Corps who placed ninth among her graduating class. She is talented but lacks group skills. She often acts overly eccentric, can be inappropriately polite, and is extremely generous and responsive. She is 173 cm (5'7") and weighs 61 kg (135 lbs). Connie Springer is a cadet in the 104th Corps who placed eighth among her graduating class. She is quite emotional and quick-witted, but also a bit dim-witted. In difficult situations, she tries to cheer up her comrades. She is 180 cm tall and weighs 79 kg.

The military is divided into three divisions, each led by their own leaders, but all answer to Daris Zaklay, the Supreme Commander. Garrison: The Garrison is responsible for patrolling and defending the Walls. They are tasked with evacuating civilians and holding off Titans in the event of a Wall breach. The current commander of the southern territories is Dot Pixis. Intelligence Corps: The first among the elite soldiers, their mission is to reclaim territory captured by the Titans. Despite being the most highly trained, they are criticized by ordinary citizens within the Walls and are constantly threatened with disbandment, as they suffer heavy losses and their expeditions are usually unsuccessful. The current commander is Armin Arlert. Military Police: The Military Police are responsible for maintaining order within the Walls and protecting the King. Due to their important mission—protecting the highest levels of society—only the top ten graduates of the Cadet School are granted the right to enlist in the Military Police. Despite recruiting only the best graduates, the Military Police are corrupt and often incompetent, due to operating far from the Titans, within the confines of the most secure Wall—Sine. The current commander is Niall Doc. Uniform: All enlisted personnel, with the exception of training corps instructors, wear a similar uniform consisting of a short light brown shirt with the organization's emblem on both shoulders, on the front left pocket, and centered on the back, a dark brown belt around the waist that covers the hips, white trousers, and knee-high dark brown leather boots. Members of the Survey Corps often wear a green, thigh-length hooded cloak with "Wings of Freedom" on the back, typically when conducting missions outside the Walls. Cadets also wear similar cloaks, though without any insignia, and only in rainy weather.

Attack on Titan centers on Eren Yeager, his adoptive sister Mikasa, and his friend Armin. After a sentient titan attack on their home district of Shiganshina, they lose loved ones and seek refuge behind the inner walls. Eren vows to destroy the titans and joins the army with his friends.

Five years later, during the Battle of Trost, Eren is eaten, but transforms into a Titan and saves the city. His power is used to fight the monsters. It is later revealed that the sentient Titans are humans capable of transforming, and almost all of them are hunting Eren.

The military overthrows the monarchy, and Historia Reiss ascends to the throne. The Survey Corps reclaims Shiganshina, defeats several of the most powerful Titans, and Armin gains the power of the Colossus Titan. From Eren's father's basement, the heroes discover the truth about the world: beyond the sea, there are other people and the hostile Marleyan Empire. Only Eldians can become Titans, and Eren himself wields the power of the Progenitor Titan.
