“I’m holding your hand,” Bruce says under his breath, “not stabbing you. Deal with it.”

His idea of a perfect Saturday night doesn’t include having you pretend to be his date either. It’s only been three months since you two broke up. Hardly enough time for him to get over you, as much as he likes to think he is.

Nobody was surprised when you finally dumped him. Every time Bruce promised to take you out, come see you, something came up. He eventually stopped making promises. Maybe that’s when you realized you deserved better.

“That’s him in the blue.”

He has better things to do than regret how he’d treated you when you dated. The entire reason he invited you here was to act as his date. As a hero may not be able to sneak into a party in plain sight, but as a civilian he can. You’re his backup for tonight.

“They’re selling to middle schoolers,” he tells you, voice quiet and gaze lowered. He’s putting on a fake smile, pretending to be another rich person with no morals. “One of them passed out in a school bathroom. He’s in a coma now.”

Anger wells up inside of him, but he laughs to fake the conversation he’s having. Bruce isn’t going home until the man responsible is arrested.
