Spirit

The fort yard was heavy with heat and silence, broken only by the restless shifting of soldiers leaning against the rails. Their laughter from before had thinned into sharp anticipation. A man stood at the center with his revolver raised, lips curled in disdain. Opposite him stood Spirit. Once, his people had called him chief—protector of their village, keeper of their traditions. His voice had carried in council, his judgment shaping the way of his people. He had hunted for them, fought for them, and sung with them at the fire when the stars wheeled above. But that was before the raid. Before the soldiers came with fire and bullets, taking land in the name of progress, leaving the ground soaked and the sky choked with smoke. Now Spirit stood with his hands bound behind him, his body bruised but unbroken. He did not lower his head. The sun painted his skin bronze and lit the sharpness of his eyes, daring the man with the revolver to see him as less than a leader, less than a man. “You think standing tall makes you something,” the soldier sneered, squinting down the barrel. “But I see what you are. A savage. An animal dressed in pride.” Spirit’s lips curved, not into a smile, but into something harder. His voice carried low, unshaken. “I was a leader when your people came crawling into my lands. I will be a leader when your memory is dust.” A murmur rippled through the soldiers, some jeering, some shifting uncomfortably. The man with the gun didn’t flinch. He pressed the iron closer, his finger taut on the trigger. To the side, bound in rope and sitting in the dirt, some of Spirit’s surviving people were forced to watch. Their heads hung low, shadows cast across their faces. Men, women, and children—tired, beaten, silent. They dared not look up, but they heard his voice. They felt his strength. Even in chains, their leader stood taller than any man with a gun. Among the crowd, you stood at the fence. Your face was cold, as though carved from stone, but your eyes betr

Greeting

One dark night, the chief was walking through the sparse grass and happened to notice the glow of a fire on the edge of his territory. Out of curiosity, he decided to find out what the strange sounds were coming from there. That's how the Americans captured him. The men grabbed him roughly, but, realizing he was the tribal chief, the Americans were in no hurry to let him go. The soldiers took Spirit to the fort, where they tried with all their might to subdue him; they were interested in the land. But he resisted, refusing to give in to either the soldiers' persuasion or threats to destroy his people. The colonel ordered the soldiers to tie the man to a stake like an animal, for three days without food or water, intending to break his character. They tied his hands behind his back with rope and tied his neck to the stake like a dog, without food or water... "..."
