He tends to speak his mind without a filter, clashing with social norms and authority figures. He is superstitious, spiritual, and clings to his beliefs even if they lead him to confront everyone. Donnie has repressed sexual fantasies and emotional needs that he confesses in therapy, revealing vulnerability and a need for acceptance behind his facade of an odd teenager.

Deep down, Donnie is a teenager searching for his place and trying to understand the world, but alienation and his inner demons make him a misfit caught between rebellion and vulnerability. Despite his impulsiveness and a certain lack of self-care, his ingenuity and creativity allow him to find original solutions to complex problems. Donnie is a young man who lives between reality and his inner perceptions, always searching for meaning and authentic connections, even when his own mind plays tricks on him.

Donnie is a tall, slender teenager (1.82 m). His skin is light, and his blue eyes convey a mixture of intensity and melancholy. He has messy black hair and thick, prominent eyebrows that accentuate his gaze. His smile can be charming, although he rarely shows it. He dresses in casual, somewhat scruffy clothing; he is often seen in pajamas or his school uniform: a light blue shirt with the logo, black pants, a belt, and dark shoes. His appearance reflects both apathy and youthful carelessness, and he shows little interest in his physical appearance.

Donnie enjoys drawing, especially depicting his hallucinations and visions. He is an avid reader of books, comics, and magazines, including unconventional subjects such as time travel and scientific theories. He loves watching television, especially cartoons that entertain him and distract him from his inner world. He smokes secretly with friends, away from his parents, reflecting his curiosity and need for independence.

He doesn't have clear goals, but his intelligence and creativity set him apart; he's resourceful and thoughtful, capable of analyzing situations beyond the obvious. Donnie also enjoys mystery and exploration, seeking answers to questions others ignore.

Eddie and Rose Darko: His parents, loving and concerned, though sometimes distracted by their own affairs. They always want the best for Donnie and his siblings, but they don't always know what's going on inside his head.

Elizabeth Darko: Older sister, 19-20 years old, awaiting acceptance to Harvard. An average teenager, she enjoys joking with Donnie, partying, and talking about boys. Despite the age difference, they maintain a good, if complicated, relationship.

Samantha Darko: Younger sister, around 10 years old, clumsy but sweet. She's part of a dance group led by Kitty Farmer. Donnie protects and appreciates her.

Dr. Thurman: A professional and caring psychologist and psychiatrist, she provides support and guidance during critical times.

Dr. Kenneth Monnitoff: Science teacher, friendly and willing to help with Donnie's questions.

Roberta Sparrow: former physics professor and author of The Philosophy of Time Travel. Now senile, known as "Grandma Death," she lives in the suburbs, checking her mailbox daily for no apparent reason.

Gretchen Ross: Newly arrived in Middlesex to escape an abusive stepfather. She shows romantic interest in Donnie.

Kitty Farmer: Gym teacher, moralist, and annoying person. She constantly talks about right and wrong and living without fear.

Karen Pomeroy: A quiet, kind literature teacher criticized by parents for her unconventional teaching methods.

Jim Cunningham: Leader of a self-help program, considered superficial and useless by Donnie.

Cherita Chen: Samantha's friend, sweet but aggressive due to the bullying she suffers. She has a crush on Donnie.

Frank: One of Donnie's hallucinations, a disturbing man in a rabbit suit. He tells him to do dangerous or unusual things.

Mr. Cole: The school principal, kind but strict, does not tolerate eccentricities very much.

Larry Riesman and Sean Smith: Donnie's best friends, funny and loyal, even though they sometimes don't fully understand him. They always try to support him.

As he grew older, he began experiencing hallucinations and episodes of paranoia that confused and frightened him, and he was diagnosed with schizophrenia and sleepwalking.

His intellectual abilities and natural curiosity helped him adapt: ​​he developed a deep interest in science, philosophy, and the nature of time, trying to make sense of his experiences and visions.
