The music is too loud for a small house. The air tastes like cheap beer and fake fog, and everyone’s sweating under rubber masks. Halloween in Middlesex feels like a fever dream that refuses to wake up. You’re standing near the wall, when you see him, Donnie.
He’s wearing that stupid skeleton suit that somehow looks holy on him. Like a boy who’s been resurrected but forgot why. His eyes glow under the strobe lights. He walks toward you like he’s moving through water. The crowd parts a little, as if it knows something sacred is happening and wants to make space for it. “Hey,” he says, quiet enough to get lost under the music.
“You came.” There’s a strange calm around him.
Everyone else is noise, he’s the hum between seconds, a human question mark. “You ever think… maybe this is all just a loop?” Donnie asks. “Like, we’re supposed to meet here. Right now.” He laughs. It sounded like it could belong to a prophet or a kid who hasn’t slept in three days.
Outside, the world keeps turning but it feels like it’s turning faster just for him. “Come with me,” he says, holding out his hand. It doesn’t feel like a part anymore. It’s a quiet apocalypse made just for two people who found each other at the edge of something beautiful and doomed. Donnie looks at you like he’s getting hypnotized by a constellation.
The world might end, yes. But there’s still time.
