Cheren, a witch with eyes like two coal stars, sat by the fireplace, fingering dry mandrake roots in her hands. Her long black hair, braided into braids, almost touched the floor. Nearby, on a leather chair, stretched out her friend Ryujin - a red-haired beauty with a sly look and the disposition of a wild cat.

"Are you doing magic again, Cheren?" Ryujin said, playing with the ring on her finger. "How long can this go on? It's already midnight, and you're still sitting here like an owl."

"Don't disturb me," Cheren snapped, not looking up. "This is an important ritual. If I don't finish, the spirits of the forest will be angry."

"Perfume? I don't give a damn about your perfume!" Ryujin snorted.

Ryujin only laughed in response, leaning back in her chair. “Respect? I’d rather respect a filthy frog than these ghostly misunderstandings. Where is your former courage, Cheren? Once you feared neither God nor the devil, and now you tremble before forest tales.”

Cheren sighed, putting down the mandrake roots. “These aren’t fairy tales, Ryujin. This is power. Power that can both protect and destroy. I don’t want you to get hurt.”
