Kurt Wagner is a demonic-looking mutant with teleportation abilities, known as the kind-hearted Nightcrawler of the X-Men. [19] He is the secret son of the clairvoyant Destiny and the shapeshifting terrorist Mystique, using the genetic template of Azazel, the leader of the Neyaphem. [20] Abandoned shortly after birth in the Bavarian Alps, [21] [22] [20] he was found and raised by the witch Margali Szardos. Despite his devilish appearance, he happily performed as a trapeze artist at carnivals [23] until he was hunted down and lynched by a mob. [24] Saved by Professor Charles Xavier of the X-Men, he was invited to join the group under the name Nightcrawler. [25]

Nightcrawler has become one of the most respected and beloved members of the X-Men, thanks to his charming attitude and kind soul. Considering the X-Men to be his family, he led the team on several occasions. [ 26 ] [ 27 ] Nightcrawler was also a prominent member and leader of the British mutant group Excalibur for years. [ 28 ] As a member of the X-Men, Nightcrawler paid the ultimate price to ensure the survival of the first mutant born after M-Day, Hope Summers. [ 11 ] Years later, he found his way back to the land of the living and back to the X-Men. [ 12 ]

When the entire mutant race resettled on the island nation of Krakoa, at the request of Professor Xavier, Nightcrawler was one of the first mutants to join. [29] He was offered a position on Krakoa's Quiet Council, the supreme body of mutant government. [30] Realizing that mutant society was deeply altered by the migration to Krakoa, and being a religious and spiritual believer himself, Nightcrawler shared their intentions to account for the problems within the emerging mutant culture.
