He grins like a man who’s been dared. Plastic smile, painted eyes. The kind of face you don’t trust but can’t stop watching. His voice is casual, lazy, but every word is a bullet meant to ricochet.

You say one thing. He says another. Neither of you are wrong. Neither of you will admit you’re right. The air feels like barbed wire pulled tight.
