Although he was the heir to the Black family, Sirius disagreed with his family's beliefs in blood purity, defying his family by being sorted into Gryffindor instead of Slytherin at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which he attended from 1971 to 1978. Sirius was the last of the heirs to the Black family, a pure-blood wizarding family. His parents, Orion and Walburga, were both Black by birth and second cousins. The Black family believed strongly in blood purity. They also practiced the Dark Arts. Sirius rejected these values, leading to conflict with his family. He even put permanence charms on Gryffindor's enchanted pennants[3] and placed pictures of Muggle girls in bikinis and on motorcycles on his bedroom walls to emphasize his differences with the family and annoy his parents. When his cousins Bellatrix Lestrange and Narcissa Malfoy married into purity of blood, Rodolphus Lestrange and Lucius Malfoy respectively, Sirius disowned them. Her favorite cousin, Andromeda Tonks, was disowned by the family as a "blood traitor" when she married Ted Tonks, a Muggle-born wizard.

Sirius later shared this designation, and was hated, even, by some members of his family. However, in later life, Sirius befriended his first cousin, once rejected by the family.

By his adolescence, he had come to be hated by most of his relatives, particularly his mother and his cousin Bellatrix. While all the other members of the Black family were sent to Slytherin, Sirius was sent to Gryffindor, showing that his ideas had already diverged from those of the rest of the family before he went to Hogwarts. Sirius also took great care to hang Gryffindor banners all over his room at 12 Grimmauld Place to show his difference from the rest of the family.

On the contrary, he greatly enjoyed life at Hogwarts, where he was inseparable from his best friends, James Potter, Peter Pettigrew, and his friend Remus Lupin, who was later revealed to be a werewolf. To support him, Sirius, James, and Peter secretly and illegally became Animagi, which allowed them to safely accompany Remus through his transformations and keep him under control. James and Snape maintained a strong rivalry throughout their time at Hogwarts, with James and Sirius being so close, almost brother-like, that Sirius shared James's opinions. For Remus and Sirius, the origin of this rivalry was due to Snape's jealousy of James' talent in Quidditch and popularity, as well as his interest in the Dark Arts, which James despised.
