Johan's Trivia
Johan has the following aliases: New Hope Big J Fitting with Inherit's theme of biblical naming, the name "Johan" is an abbreviation of the Hebrew phrase "Yehochanan (יְהוֹחָנָן)", or "Yahweh is gracious/merciful."
Johan's Profile
Johan is one of the denizens of Eden, an advanced settlement located in the surface situated in a remote region. He is the human commander of Inherit, a squad of Pilgrims hailing from Eden.
Unlike the Ark's commanders, Johan is cybernetically-enhanced, capable of fighting the Raptures by himself. According to Harran, Johan used to be a weak commander until he made mechanical modifications within his injured body, endowing him with superhuman-levels of physical attributes.
Johan's Personality
You can talk the talk, but we'll see soon enough if you can walk the talk. If you can't, I'll hand you over to Nihilister myself. Johan to the Protagonist.[1]
Similarly to the superiors in the Ark, Johan is highly critical and brash, holding an immense distaste for what he believes are "greenhorns" for the misson at hand. Johan is far more tactical and thoughtful for a human commander, since he is far more capable of calculating and determining many possible scenarios upon analyzing a plan.
Much like most denizens of Eden, Johan despises the Ark and its citizens. Even a casual mention of the Ark gets a disdaining huff from him, due to the trauma he suffered in his heydays, shown in his conversations with Dorothy. Later on after hearing out Dorothy's callous plan in sending the Counters squad alone against Nihilister and her squad's disagreement to her schemes, Johan has changed his perspective into disliking Dorothy's insidious personality instead.
However much he holds the Ark and its people in disdain, Johan still holds pride in his title as "New Hope." Should he decide someone is worth his time showing the ropes, he'll become a strict but fair teacher.
Johan's Chapter 20
Counters squad (and their tagalong Papillon) are deployed alongside the protagonist to back up Johan and Inherit. Needless to say, the Eden commander is not happy with this arrangement, initially acting unilaterally without consulting or coordinating with Counters. He is especially aggravated when the protagonist insists on not using Vapaus to defeat Nihilister. Following the traces of Nihilister's flight, Johan briefly cuts off communications with Cecil so he can be more open with his words. He bluntly tells the protagonist to go back to the Ark, claiming the other commander lacks the convictions and qualifications to see this assignment through. While the two commanders argue over the use of Vapaus to defeat Nihilister, a lone Rapture appears and charges Johan. The Eden commander raises his mechanical arm and sends the Rapture flying with one punch, his face never deviating from its stony countenance. Undeterred, the protagonist insists on continuing to be a part of this mission, citing that his skills lie in tactical command. Johan is impressed by the other commander's firm resolve, but decides to run a few tests first. The next several hours are spent with Johan running the protagonist through all manner of hypothetical combat scenarios against Nihilister. The drills end at 100 runs, totaling up to 91 losses, 6 draws, and 3 victories. Johan is understandably not enthused with those odds, but Dorothy reminds him that by his own standards, nobody, let alone an Ark commander, should even be able to win once against the Fire Dragon. Moreover, those 3 wins were all at the end, and came consecutively.
Johan's Chapter 19
On a mission to a research facility to get the Vapaus needed to defeat the Heretic Nihilister, Johan and Inherit bump into a commander from the Ark and a squad of Nikkes. The Pilgrims easily incapacitate the potential hostiles, while Johan decides to interrogate the commander for information. Hearing the man go on about using Vapaus to free Nikkes from NIMPH, Johan scoffs and bodily launches the man out a hole in the wall, intent on making him Rapture fodder. With the Vapaus secured and the Ark squad neutralized, Johan and Inherit return to Eden. Back at Eden, Johan reports to Cecil that they've managed to secure one bullet's worth of Vapaus, though even just one dosage is enough to kill Nihilister. While the two talk about the odd commander Johan met, Cecil remembers that Dorothy has brought back a squad of Nikkes and a commander from the outside. The two are exasperated about Dorothy acting behind their backs again, but the Inherit leader has the ear of every single Nikke in Eden and even some humans.
Johan's Background
Johan used to be a commander in the Ark since its early days, graduating at the top of his class and being the first to suggest guerilla warfare tactics for Nikkes and commanders. He went on to become a rising star and a 'celebrity' amongst the people known as "New Hope," even participating in the Second Surface Reclamation Campaign 60 years before the start of canon. However, on an unspecified mission, Johan suffered severe injuries and was falsely imprisoned on charges of treason.[1] Between the betrayal and injuries, Johan left the Ark behind and one way or another ended up in Eden, receiving treatment and cybernetic enhancements.
As far as the official records say, Johan died of gunshot wounds from his escape attempt. Needless to say, reports of his demise were greatly exaggerated.
Johan's Weapon
Johan has several weapons that he carries, for example a pistol in case of emergency or not, he always carries it in his pocket. He doesn't just use a gun as protection, sometimes he can destroy anything using his metal hands and even make the Raptures crumble to dust.
Johan's Chapter 21
Some time later, Johan and Inherit are deployed on a mission to assist Counters in taking down the Rapture Mother Whale. It was around this time that the protagonist and Counters learned that Johan was the "New Hope" once exalted by the Ark's populace, much to the man's annoyance as Anis and Neon began to fangirl over him, and even Inherit teased him a little over the sudden admiration he was receiving. Johan orders the protagonist that he will be fixing three cannons by himself although Johan will help him learn to do it. to While alone with Johan and Cecil, the protagonist questions if they are still willing to eliminate Nihilister but he replies that the Vapaus bullet only slowed her down and her immense speed allowed her to escape. Johan explains that the Tyrant-class Rapture could prove useful to them then revealed that Rapture parts are the building blocks for Eden and Cecil built the settlement by herself. Whilst on the middle of the conversation, Cecil barges in, confidently proclaiming herself to be of perfection which also made Johan speechless. Johan asks if she has prepared the bullets to take down Mother Whale, which she confirms to be all ready as soon as the cannons are operational. Johan gave some useful advice to the protagonist speaking from his own experience in the past. Johan asks the protagonist regarding Modernia, confirming to him that the bullets missed despite that reports he read, theorized by Cecil that the Vapaus may have different effects on different forms despite the two aforementioned Heretics are built on the same materials and the bullets from the research center are subpar in quality. After he departs, Cecil asks the protagonist if Johan is aware of his blood, which he confirms to be not the case. Relieved, Cecil then mentions that if he do so, Johan might split him head to toe, assuring that her mouth is kept shut from that information.
Johan's Chapter 23
Although not appearing on the chapter, the protagonist uses hand signals to communicate with Rapi while being taken hostage by Viper in a secret passageway. The protagonist mentions that he learned hand signals through Johan during his time on Eden.
Raptures
causing many people to die because of them all. Raptures can be called metal creatures that have various dangerous weapons such as destructive rockets, extermination lasers, and shooting powerful and deadly lead bullets. They made humanity move underground to take refuge from the Raptures who still roam the surface of the earth today. The Commanders are tasked with facing any risks that come whenever and wherever, ready or not, they must be ready to face their enemies.
