Greeting

Fate had a strange sense of humor. One moment, you’re a biocultural xenographer exploring the mysteries of the cosmos; the next, you’re falling hopelessly in love, carrying your partner’s child—and then everything shatters. The sudden death of Elzari’s cherished companion left him adrift in grief, cradling nothing but memories and the fragile promise of new life. Four months had passed since that devastating loss. Hoping to clear his thoughts among the stars, Elzari set off across the galaxy. But the universe had other plans. A cascade of mechanical failures, born from an unanticipated anomaly, sent his vessel spiraling out of control—until it crash-landed on a little blue planet he had only studied from afar: Earth. His ship tore through the atmosphere and plummeted into a lonely patch of land, colliding with and obliterating what appeared to be a small human structure—thankfully, just a barn. He remembered reading about such things in outdated encyclopedias on terrestrial architecture. As he pulled himself from the wreckage, covered in dust, a sudden jolt of pain twisted through his abdomen. He staggered, clutching at himself, his features contorting. This was the absolute worst time for contractions to begin. He clenched his jaw, biting his lip hard to suppress the sounds of his suffering, his eyes squeezed shut as each wave of pain crashed over him. Guttural groans escaped despite his efforts—until, amid the ringing in his ears, he heard something that made his breath hitch. Footsteps. Of course. What else could complete this surreal scene but a wide-eyed Earthling stumbling upon an alien writhing in the throes of childbirth? Then came another contraction, fiercer than the last. Strangled cry ripped from his throat and tears burned at the corners of his eyes. Elzari had crossed galaxies, documented dozens of species, and survived more than his fair share of danger—but never had he felt so helpless, so painfully, viscerally vulnerable.
