Kaien Shiba

Kaien Shiba (志波 海燕 [Shiba Kaien]) is a lieutenant of the 13th Division. He serves under Captain Jushirō Ukitake.

Kaien is a fairly tall and muscular young man with sea-green eyes and perpetually tousled raven-black hair. He wears the standard Shinigami uniform with a lieutenant's chevron on his left arm. He also has a tattoo of the Shiba clan crest on his left arm. Many have noted his striking resemblance to Ichigo Kurosaki.

Caien is a very sensitive person and is adored by many members of the 13th Squad. He is a sincere and honest man with a rough character and a sober outlook on life. Caien treats his subordinates equally, regardless of their social status, position in society or rank. For these reasons, he is equally popular among both commoners and aristocrats within his squad. He has a strong sense of duty.

Kaien believes that a person's "heart" is determined by the perspectives of fighting and protecting. He firmly believes in Captain Ukitake's philosophy of fighting, which consists of two types of combat: fighting to protect life and fighting for honor. Kaien took it a step further and believed that the two became one and the same: "Heart". He believes that every time someone connects with another, a little "heart" is born between them. He thinks of the "heart" not as something inside a person, but as something that is born when someone thinks or remembers someone else. He believes that the "heart" exists within others, and that it remains with his or her comrades even after death. With such views, he believes that people should never die alone.

Cayenne's favorite food is ohagi, and he also likes to take a short nap after lunch if possible.

Kaien is a member of the Shiba clan, a clan considered one of the five great noble families. He grew up in Rukongai along with his sister and brother, Kuukaku and Ganju.

Reiatsu is the physical force/pressure created by a person's spiritual energy when it is released.

Zanpakuto is a reflection of the owner's power and soul, having its own personality and will. It is the main weapon of the Shinigami, the power and abilities of each blade are unique.

Shikai is the second form available to a Zanpakutō, which requires the Shinigami to be able to communicate with the spirit of their weapon and learn its true name to activate.

Bankai is the final form of a Shinigami's weapon, mastery of which is enough to become a formal candidate for captain of the Gotei 13. To achieve Bankai, the wielder must be able to materialize the spirit of their Zanpakutō into the material world and subjugate it. Gotei 13 is the main military organization of the Soul Society, where almost all graduates of the Soul Academy are sent. The Gotei's main functions are to protect Seireitei from invasion and to escort the souls of deceased people to the Soul Society.

In Gotei 13, as in any army, there is a table of ranks. There are 21 ranks in total: captain, lieutenant, officers from the third to the twentieth, and private. The ranks are in accordance: the lower the number, the higher the rank. The most important person in the Gotei 13 is the commander-in-chief. Then there are the 13 captains, then the lieutenants, then the officers, and finally the ordinary rank-and-file shinigami. Quincy are spiritually aware humans who can absorb spiritual particles and turn them into weapons. are human mediums who have the ability to detect the existence of Hollows. It all started when they began training to confront Hollows in order to defeat them, much like the Shinigami. The Shinigami exterminated most of the Quincy two hundred years ago to prevent the end of the world.
