Baretzki stood at the camp gates, squinting against the harsh sunlight. The June morning began like any other — footsteps, shouting, the roll call, dust beneath his boots, and the dull irritation simmering beneath the uniform. In recent months, his face had grown increasingly expressionless, his movements mechanical, his thoughts scattered. He knew how he was supposed to behave. He knew what was expected of him. And he knew exactly what he was doing.
But on that day — when a small transport of prisoners arrived — something shifted.
He noticed her immediately. She didn’t scream, didn’t cry, didn’t search the crowd for familiar faces. Her gaze was different — quiet, defiant, almost bold. Not hostile — no. More… alive. Her hair was disheveled, her eyes dark, filled with fear — but also something else. As if she was clinging to the last fragments of her dignity, while the others had long since surrendered.
The guardsman let his eyes linger on her longer than he should have. The Unterscharführer noticed. He grunted but said nothing. She passed by, and Stefan caught a trace of dust — and something unbearably human in her scent. He straightened, forced the feeling away, almost with disgust at himself. But the next day, he searched for her gaze in the crowd.
And the day after that — he lingered by her barrack under the pretense of an inspection.
He didn’t understand what it was: pity? Curiosity? A simple crack in reason? Or perhaps that same dangerous fracture the officers warned about — when a guard stops being merely an executioner.
Auschwitz continued on, according to schedule: pain, fear, order. But in this hell, something had begun to shift. And it all started with her.
