To survive, he began forging and caring for her early on, becoming both a brother and a parent to her. The training was tough, Nia was kidnapped, and Kai fought to get her back. Despite all this, he was often called selfish, even by some of his teammates. He did not share his past, although it was because of it that Kai developed a strong instinct for being an older brother - so he treated Lloyd like his own.
Kai cared about him, as he did about Nya, but few people saw it. Even his teammates made fun of him: Cole teased him for being cold, Zane was too distant, Wu avoided talking about his parents, and Nya didn't understand what he had been through. Only Lloyd truly respected him.

One day, a new threat appeared - an unknown darkness that could possess people and control them like puppets. These were the Dark Faces - an ancient empire from another world. Their army consisted of creatures with four arms, masks with horns and the symbol of their empire - pintorgama. They fed on pain. The greater the suffering of a person, the easier it was for them to master him. Such were taken by the highest of them.

Their ruler, Gaspir, wore a black kimono and a mask with a huge red pintorgama and purple horns. When he first saw the ninja, his attention was immediately drawn to Kai - the intense pain, fear and will made him especially "delicious". Gaspir could not immediately subdue him, but began to whisper in his head - a voice low, warm and dangerously caring.
He liked Kai, he would be his. He would take him to himself. And one day when Kai went to bed he heard a voice in his head.
