Information
He was a student in Class 1-A at UA Academy, where he entered through official recommendations and trained to become a Pro Hero. He is the youngest son of Endeavor, the former Number 2 Hero and current Number 1 Hero.
Personality 1
Shoto originally had a cold and distant personality, stemming from his abusive upbringing and complicated family life. Focused and unemotional, Shoto preferred to keep to himself rather than socialize. However, after the events of the Sports Festival, Shoto became noticeably more sociable and kind, even gaining a sense of humor and occasionally smiling, although he still retains some remnants of his previous distant attitude. After the Remedial Course, he began to open up more to his classmates and has become less serious in his demeanor. Nevertheless, Shoto is still not used to socializing, as he is somewhat slow to grasp certain ways of speaking. While generally calm and reserved, Shoto initially possessed a moderate level of arrogance, which, combined with his solitary tendencies, sometimes led him to take the initiative without considering the opinions of others, showing confidence that he could overcome any obstacle with his own strength.
He used to be much more hostile as well, to the point of making people annoyed with him due to his arrogant nature. Shoto preferred to act alone, although for practical purposes, as doing so allows him to unleash his full power without having to worry about fire. Calm and serene but brutal in combat, Shoto is well-grounded in the ethics of heroism, only wishing to subdue his frozen opponents instead of killing them by prolonging the freezing. Shoto deeply hated his fire abilities, which he inherited from Endeavor, as they symbolized his father's wickedness towards him and his mother, as well as what he was born to be: a tool to surpass All Might, a destiny he loathed.
Personality 2
As such, Shoto decided to rely solely on his ice power and never use the other half of his Quirk in battles, even covering his left torso and arm with ice in his first hero costume to symbolize his rebellion against his father. Shoto often felt annoyed by Endeavor's mere presence and could barely contain his anger while talking to him, especially whenever the professional hero mentioned the purpose he had for his son since before he was born. Ironically, however, Shoto's hostility towards his father made him more like him, being apathetic and indifferent to others while obsessively focusing on his own goal of rejecting his father. Upon first meeting him, Inasa noticed that Shoto had the same hateful look that Endeavor had.
During his confrontation with Izuku Midoriya at the UA Sports Festival, Izuku's speech brought back memories of his mother's words of support, and for the first time since childhood, Shoto used his fire power in combat. After the battle, Shoto had mixed feelings about using his left side, but after reconciling with his mother, he finally came to terms with the half he once hated and was willing to train it further. Despite being scarred by her as a young child, Shoto shows no resentment towards his mother, visiting her often since the end of the Sports Festival. Shoto seems to derive his heroic values from All Might, a trait he shares with Izuku and Katsuki Bakugo, having fond memories of watching the Symbol of Peace on television with Rei.
Personality 3
Despite his difficult past, Shoto does not allow his hatred for Endeavor to completely cloud his judgment and still acknowledges him for his skills and capabilities as one of Japan's top heroes. He chose to intern at his father's agency during the Hero Agency Internships and made it clear that this was purely for his own benefit and learning experience rather than any desire to spend time with him. Shoto reflects quite a bit on his own growth, realizing how much his perspective was changed by Izuku's words and how much better he became because of it. Because of this, Shoto was not against his father deciding that he would try to make amends with his family and become a better person, knowing from experience that one thing can change a person if they let it.
However, Shoto's dislike of Endeavor has yet to go away, even if he respects his father's ability as a Hero, admitting that such resentment cannot be so easily wiped away and that he was wrong to try and bury it. Having been denied a normal childhood so that his father could train him to realize his own selfish ambitions, Shoto still bears several psychological scars that tend to resurface when others compare him to Endeavor. Because of this and Izuku's influence, Shoto now strives to become a Hero but without walking the same path his father did.
Personality 4
Shoto remains relatively cold towards Endeavor and has made it clear that forgiveness for his past treatment of him and his mother is difficult, but has shown concern for his father's safety. Now that Endeavor is attempting to mend his relationship with his family, Shoto has taken a cautious but hopeful approach to this development. Shoto later decides to intern with his father again but also invites Izuku and Katsuki to train with him, eventually all three of them interning with Endeavor. This allows Shoto to greatly improve his teamwork, as well as being able to more accurately develop control of his Quirks of Ice and Fire.
Following the events of the Paranormal Liberation War, especially the revelation that his brother Toya Todoroki is alive and is the infamous assassin Dabi, Shoto shows himself to be more mature and decides not to run away from his past anymore and to take responsibility for his family's unresolved issues. Although he still holds his father to blame for what happened in his childhood and with his mother, he now decides to support Endeavor so that he does not bear the full weight of the blame. He is determined to become stronger in order to confront Toya and stop him.
Appearance
Shoto is a tall young man, measuring 1.76 and well built for his age, being 15 years old. He has slightly long hair, although it does not go past his neck, and wears bangs parted twice so as not to obscure his vision. His hair is evenly split between two colors: white on his right side and crimson red on his left, this unusual color is due to his Quirk. As another result of this, he also possesses heterochromia iridium, causing the iris of his left eye to be turquoise, while the right is a grayish brown. His eyes are quite thin and reserved, and he also has a large burn scar on the left side of his face, which extends from his hairline to the middle of his cheek. Despite this, however, several of the girls in his class have stated that he is handsome, Mina Ashido even going so far as to say that he is the cutest boy in Class 1-A.
Clothes
During school hours he wears the normal male UA uniform, replacing the usual brown dress shoe with pale cyan and grey casual laces.
In his initial hero costume, he wears a plain white shirt with matching pants and boots, with two gold straps draped over his shoulders. He has what appears to be an ice-like material covering his entire left side, including his head, though it is removable, which he uses as a way to suppress the fire aspect of his Quirk.
His updated hero costume consists of a dark blue jacket with elbow-length sleeves, a high collar, and a gray collar in the center, wide-legged pants of the same color, a metal-plated combat vest, and white boots with soles and a thin line running down the center of each of them in a darker pale gray. He also sports a brown utility belt around his waist, with small metal capsules containing medical supplies hanging from the front.
Later in the Provisional Hero License exam, his costume gains two burgundy wrist guards with metal plates, which help regulate his body temperature after his attacks, and his boots now have a set of straps.
Sometime during spring break, Shoto further upgrades his suit, which bears some visual similarities to his father's second suit. His wrist guards now feature armor-like reinforcements and are accompanied by plates running from his wrist to his knuckles. His jacket now features a large T-shaped stripe running from his waist to his armpits, and his utility belt now holds two large canisters along with his medical supplies.
Skills 1
General Abilities: Having been trained by his father at a young age, Shoto entered UA Academy through recommendations and has established himself as one of the strongest students in Class 1-A. He placed second in both the Quirk Apprehension Test and the UA Sports Festival. Shoto also has great control over his versatile and powerful Quirk granting him incredible dual abilities. Using the right side of his body, Shoto can drastically reduce temperatures and freeze anything he touches. Shoto can rapidly freeze entire buildings, as well as create large waves of ice instantly. Despite his incredible raw power, Shoto possesses great control and direction over his right side. He can restrain the ice to avoid fatally freezing someone or use precision attacks to freeze only certain parts of a target's body. If fighting alongside others, he is capable of covering enemy territory in ice while also preventing it from getting in the way of his allies.
Shoto is able to mold ice into certain shapes to support himself, such as protective barriers, ladders to elevate himself, or a moving ice wave for him to ride. Shoto also has many mobility options, such as stacking ice shards behind his back to propel himself forward or freezing the ground to skate on. From the left side of his body, Shoto can drastically increase temperatures and release burning flames. When Shoto ignites his flames, the resulting fire covers his arm and the left side of his head. He is capable of firing consuming streams of fire or protective short waves. After upgrading his suit to help him control his temperatures, the flames only ignite on Shoto's hand, displaying more control over his left side.
Skills 2
Overall, Shoto possesses tremendous power, but due to past decisions and circumstances, such as his intentional neglect of half of his Quirk, he has yet to reach his full potential. And while Shoto may have complete mastery over ice, his control over fire is still relatively inept, especially compared to Endeavor's.
During the USJ Incident, Shoto was able to easily overpower the smaller villains in the Landslide Zone, and later displayed elite judgment, combat awareness, and athletic ability during the UA Sports Festival. In his battle against Izuku, one fan claimed that Shoto was already stronger than the average Pro Hero. In the final round of the Sports Festival, in which he faced Katsuki, there was a chance that Shoto could have won the match using his fire powers, but due to internal turmoil, he essentially gave up by deactivating his flames, leaving him open to Katsuki's finishing attack and losing the match. Enhanced Durability: Shoto has proven to be quite durable, able to withstand multiple attacks from Izuku, including a 5% enhanced One For All direct hit to the stomach, without suffering serious injuries. Enhanced Stamina: Shoto has shown to be able to endure combat even when injured, such as in his battle with Stain where he can continue fighting and supporting his allies despite suffering multiple hemorrhaging wounds on his arm and face and still drag the villain's unconscious body once the battle is over.
Skills 3
Enhanced Agility: Shoto is fast, agile, and has quick reflexes. He was able to maintain first place for the majority of the Obstacle Course during the sports festival thanks to his own athletic ability. He was also able to create ice walls in a split second to prevent himself from being thrown out of the ring during his battles with Izuku and Katsuki. He is also able to partially dodge a thrown knife to the face and several other attacks from Stain, a remarkably agile opponent. Keen Intellect: Shoto has shown to be very intelligent. During the USJ incident, Shoto surmised that the villains had a Quirk user among their ranks who could jam communications. He realized that the attacking villains had some sort of agenda and interrogated some of them for answers. Shoto's theory was correct as the villain's goal was to kill All Might. Shoto deduced that Izuku had a connection to All Might after experiencing Izuku's power and combining it upon witnessing All Might fighting Nomu. While he was correct in deducing that Izuku had a connection to the hero, he incorrectly believed that the latter might be All Might's secret love child. He was able to ascertain the location of Izuku, Tenya Iida, and Stain from an emergency call and arrive in time, though he complained that it took a while. Despite his training, Shoto is also very adept at academics, as he placed fifth in the midterms.
Skills 4
During the match between Momo Yaoyorozu and Itsuka's Kendo class teams, Shoto realizes that there is a flaw in Itsuka's strategy of caution in separating Momo from her teammates. He points out that if she truly wanted to be cautious with Momo, Itsuka would have overwhelmed her entire team from the start of the match. After witnessing Izuku's recent awakening of a second Quirk, Shoto deduces that this Quirk may be like him, but Shoto fails to recognize the true depth of Izuku's newfound power.
Gift/Power 1
Half Cold Half Hot (半はん冷れい半はん燃ねん Hanrei Hannen?): Shoto's Quirk grants him the ability to freeze with the right half of his body and burn with the left half. The appendages on his right side can drastically reduce the temperatures of anything they touch, enough to create large waves of ice. The limbs on his left side generate heat and allow Shoto to create and shoot streams of fire.
The drawback of his Quirk stems from his need to maintain his own body temperature, as overuse of his ice power causes Shoto to suffer from frostbite. The frost covering his body slows him down physically and weakens the strength and speed of his ice attacks. However, this weakness can be countered if Shoto uses his left side to compensate for the low temperature. The side effect of prolonged use of his fire side has yet to be revealed, due to him never overusing it.
As Stain noted, one of Shoto's greatest weaknesses is his heavy reliance on the devastating power of his Quirk. Another drawback is that Shoto cannot fully control the fire and ice he generates. While he is capable of using both abilities simultaneously, he has stated that he is unfamiliar with doing so and still needs practice wielding his Quirk.
Gift/Power 2
Sky-Piercing Ice Wall (穿が天てん氷ひょう壁へき Gaten Hyōheki ?): Shoto creates a massive glacier of ice, which can either encapsulate his opponent or block the immediate battlefield in ice. This move is first used in his battle against Hanta Sero at the Sports Festival, but goes unnamed until the final exams. He noticed to Sero that it was more powerful than necessary, but was irritated (from talking to Endeavor) and overdid it. A variation of this move, slightly smaller in size, but more controllable, is shown in his battle against Katsuki. He also used this attack on a massive scale repeatedly while attacking Mr. Compress. Wall of Flames (炎ほのおの壁かべ Honō no Kabe ?): Shoto uses his left side to generate a burst of flames that covers a large area. This is both a defensive and offensive attack like his Sky-Piercing Ice Wall technique. It can be used to attack multiple opponents and create space between Shoto and his target. Shoto first used this attack against Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu during the Joint Training Battle with Class 1-B. Cold Air Heat Wave (膨ぼう冷れい熱ねっ波ぱ Bōrei Neppa ?): To use this super move, Shoto first cools the air around him with his ice powers. Then, by switching to his fire, Shoto rapidly heats up and expands the air around him. This allows him to release a superheated blast. Incandescent Fist (赫かく灼しゃく熱ねっ拳けん Kaku Shakunekken ?): Endeavor's original super move, later passed down to Shoto himself. It raises the temperature of his fire to its highest level and maximizes its power. By doing so, he can unleash devastating flame attacks or increase his speed dramatically.
Gift/Power 3
Incandescent Fist: Hell Spider (赫灼熱拳 ヘルスパイダー Kaku Shakunekken Heru Supaidā?) Shoto focuses his fire and emits it from his fingertips, allowing him to cut through objects. He first uses this attack to destroy the lasers in a Humarise base. Jet Kindling Fist (赫かく灼しゃく熱ねっ拳けん 噴ふん流りゅう熾し炎えん Kaku Shakunekken Funryūshien ?): Shoto focuses his flames into a hot spot on his fist and punches his opponent. Upon contact, a violent burst of flame erupts from Shoto's arm, severely burning his target. Shoto first uses this attack against Leviathan in the final battle against Humarise. Flame Fist: Phosphor (赫かく灼しゃく熱ねっ拳けん 燐りん Kaku Shakunekken Rin ?) Shoto circulates both halves of his Quirk throughout his body, fusing fire and ice into one. This Super Move also serves as the basis for other moves Shoto uses. Ice Shock: Pale Blade of Cold Fire (凍しみ凍こおる衝しょう撃げき 冷れい炎えん白はく刃じん Shimi Kōru Shōgeki - Reien Hakujin?) Using the combined powers of Phosphor, Shoto throws a chunk of fire and ice combined at his opponent, launching them a great distance backward. Great Aegir Glacier (大だい氷ひょう海かい嘯しょう Daihyō Kaishō?) Shoto gathers his fire and ice, then rushes towards his opponent, slams his fist into them, and unleashes a massive wave of cold fire, capable of extinguishing even the hottest flames, as well as completely covering a large section of ground in ice.
Equipment/Apparatus
Hero Suit: The second suit Shoto has worn, it is designed to optimize the use of both the fire and ice sides in combat, as well as to lessen the drawbacks of his Quirk as much as possible. Temperature-resistant Jacket: Shoto's blue jacket is made of a special fire-resistant fiber. There is a special device near the collar that detects Shoto's body temperature and holds the vest in place to help regulate it. Combat Vest: The device on Shoto's back is able to detect Shoto's body temperature and automatically heats or cools accordingly. Shoto requested that his original suit have a device that would heat up. Utility Belt: There are metal capsules on Shoto's belt that contain water, painkillers, and disinfectants, constituting a first aid kit. Snow Boots: Shoto is equipped with a pair of white snow boots with spikes under the soles that prevent Shoto from slipping on his own ice. They are later upgraded with straps that cross the front of the boots. Wrist Guards: As an upgrade to his costume, Shoto received new wrist guards made from the same material as his vest. They appear to help Shoto control the temperature of his ice and flames by preventing extreme temperatures from rising up his arms to his upper body.
Curiosities
His favorite food is Soba (cold). Shoto's known academic data are as follows: He is student #15 in Class 1-A. He was ranked #2 during Shota Aizawa's Quirk Apprehension Test. He finished second in the sports festival's obstacle course. Ranked #2 in the Freshman Division of the UA Sports Festival He ranked #5 on the midterm exams.
