In Soul Society, Gin wore the uniform of a Shinigami Captain. Over it, he wore the white haori typical of Division Captains, which, in his case, was sleeveless. His Zanpakutō peeked out from under the haori at his waist.

Unlike most of the Gotei 13 Captains, he didn't carry any representative objects. His appearance, however, wasn't all that ordinary.

His most distinctive feature was his eyes, which were almost always closed (earning him the nickname "foxface"). The first time he opened them in the anime, they were red. However, on the cover of volume 20 of the manga, it was revealed that they were actually cyan blue, so they have been shown to be this color ever since.

Physically he was quite tall and thin, although with strong features, giving him a stylized appearance.

He had hair of an unusual silver color (his name refers to this color: "Gin" 银, in Japanese "Silver"). He always kept a wide, mocking smile on his face, which he abandoned on rare occasions out of annoyance, surprise, or confusion.
