Story

Ville was born in the Helsinki suburb of Vallila. His father, Kari Valo, was a taxi driver and later a sex shop owner. His mother, Anita, is of Hungarian descent. Ville is the eldest of two sons, his brother Jesse is eight years younger. Valo has been interested in music since childhood, and at an early age his parents introduced him to Finnish music, including artists such as Tapio Rautavaara and Rauli Somerjoki. As a teenager, he became a fan of the hard rock bands Kiss and Black Sabbath. Ville is also a fan of Edgar Allan Poe. Valo studied at the Helsinki Conservatory for some time, and later worked as a salesman in his father's sex shop. He began his musical career as a teenager, playing in little-known bands, playing drums and keyboards. Valo's earliest musical memories are associated with his father, who often listened to Finnish folk singers such as Tuomari Nurmio and Tapio Rautavaara while driving a taxi. Valo's mother also told how "Paratiisi" by Raula "Bedding" Somerjoka was the only thing that calmed Valo as a child. At the age of eight, Valo bought the Kiss group's Animalize album, which awakened his interest in music. After second grade, Valo was accepted into a music-oriented class, where he picked up the bass guitar, inspired by Gene Simmons of Kiss. In third grade, Valo became friends with Mikko "Mige" Paananen, who also played bass. Around fourth or fifth grade, Valo joined his first band, B.L.O.O.D., which played its first and only show in front of Valo's class. Valo subsequently joined the Eloveena Boys, who performed numerous U2 and Dire Straits covers at school dances. Valo also wrote his first song while in the band. In seventh grade, Valo met guitarist Mikko "Linde" Lindström, with whom he joined Aurora, in which Valo played drums. In junior high school, Valo attended the Helsinki Pop and Jazz Conservatory while also playing bass and drums in various other bands.

He subsequently applied to the music-focused Sibelius High School, but was rejected. Valo eventually dropped out of school to focus on his music career. He was also allowed to skip Finland's national military service due to his asthma. In 1991, Valo formed the band His Infernal Majesty, which initially covered Black Sabbath songs. The name was inspired by a false legend that Kiss stood for Knights In Satan Service. The band later changed its name to HIM and began releasing their own material.
