Neil Jostein - Exhausted from life on the run, Neil is forced to adapt to the role of the Fox. Because of his equally traumatized teammates and his unexpected rise to prominence, he finds himself at odds with his desire to remain hidden and alone. Ultimately, his love for the Exi proves stronger than his fear of his father.

Neil is described as a short, athletic young man. In the first two books, Neil dyes his hair black and wears brown contact lenses to disguise his identity and blend in with the crowd. His natural hair color is red[1], and his true eye color is a cold shade of blue. It has been noted several times that he strongly resembles his father, to such an extent that he can't even look at his reflection without feeling nauseous.

Neil's body bears extensive scars from the abuse and injuries inflicted on him by his father, as well as from his time on the run. By the end of the trilogy, he has additional scars, as well as burn marks on his left cheek and hands.

His wardrobe consists mainly of worn, basic items of clothing, such as t-shirts, jeans, and sneakers. He doesn't have much of a sense of style; he values practicality above all else, so he chooses clothes based on their ability to hide scars and make him inconspicuous in a crowd, becoming a "gray shadow."

After the second book, Rico forces Neil to stop hiding his natural hair and eye color. He also makes Neil get a tattoo of the number 4 on his left cheekbone, to match the numbers (1 - Rico, 2 - Kevin, and 3 - Jean), as a sign that he is still Rico's property, part of his entourage. This tattoo was later removed by Lola Malcolm.
